SMA, short for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

“O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (Daniel 3:15-18).

I’m very impressed by the latter statement.
“But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up”

It wasn’t just blind faith, nor utter challenging of God to save them. Eitherway, by their action of not bowing nor serving the idols, it is the due responsibility. The act in itself is already a requirement, thus with obedience, brings glory to God.

If God so chooses to rescue them, it’s an added bonus. Else, it remains down the history of them as martyrs. God chose to save them in a miraculous feat.

Can you think of somebody God chose not to save from death and pain? The first person I can think of is Jesus. It was God’s will for Jesus to suffer and die for our sins. Nevertheless, God chose to cause Jesus to rise on the 3rd day for his glory for ever more.

All of Jesus disciples died, does that mean God chose not to save them? No. It was part of God’s plan as we look back. Thus the hymn ‘Faith of our Fathers’. It was with much tear, and blood that we, the heathens were redeemed by Jesus as his words were brought to us and convicts us.

To God be the glory. Great things he has done.
