Sin of discontentment, lust.

Sin of discontentment, lust.

I was reading Numbers 11. Did not really understand. The people were complaining of no meat which they used to have in Egypt. God heard and was displeased. Gave them meat. Yet somewhere towards the end, it says people were killed because of lust?

These modern Internet techonology is a blessing from God. Back then before we were in the information age, looking for response, answers, feedback were close to non. Now everything is just a search away.

I was pretty shocked by these verses.
Numbers 11:18-20
18And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. 19Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;
20But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

Note vs 20.
until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD
… Loathsome …. Despised the Lord.
It sounded very harsh to me. It sounded like you want money? I’ll give you money. So much money that even your breath smells of money. So much money that you’ll begin to loath monehatEhat sure sounded like a harsh statement from God! I’d be peeing in my pants and be begging for forgiveness!!

It sounded not giving in gracious abundance but in punishment. It sounded like someone who complained about not having money and complained for more money! Do note that these ppl who complained are not starving. They are well fed by God with manna. So in the same manner, note I did not mention not having enough money, but asking for more! Is asking for more a sin? It depends. Is it a genuine desire approved of God? Or out of lust and selfish desires? How would I know if I’m asking for the right thing? Lord please open our eyes, ears and hearts to your teaching.

My simple mind gathers from here is the attitude of asking. In fact, they were not asking. They were LUSTING!!

Numbers 4:4-6
4And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
5We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:
6But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

It is apparent that God is determined to get rid of these people from the camp. Which leads me to some “corporate” behaviour in our modern world. Nothing is more important than attitude. Having the right attitude, will bring you and the rest of people to the end of the world. Having a bunch of complainaints are likened to be a bunch of rotten apples. They’ll affect the rest. So it seems that God was determined to get rid of this rotten bunch.

Now. With a little prayer and discernment, and several more readings. Does this not bring out the flavour of God’s precious word to us!

I think my take away for Numbers 11 are:
1. Contentment with God.
2. Do not lust for more.
3. Failure to be contented may have harsh consequences. Hey! It’s all about choice and consequence right?
4. God wisdom in managing the people.
5. Moses what did he do? He just followed Gods order.

What happned to these people who lusted for meat?
33And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.
34And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.

They died.

Dear God,
our eternal heavenly father, touch our hearts and cleanse us of any sins. If there be any discontentmnt, lust, gluttony, put them away from us. I’m but a frail child of yours. I know nothing more than what you have taught, guided and shown to us. Help us to draw nigh to you. Forgive us. Guide us to walk in your way.
In Precious Jesus name, Amen.

  1. Looks like sometime later, God heard the grumble of the people again and gave quail.
    Exodus 16.
13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.
No punishment this time it seems.

  2. Oops. Sometime before. Exodus came before Numbers. So this is the 2nd time.
